textile artist

Genevieve Rudd has led and organised community arts projects since 2011 and is based in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Genevieve has been working in Cyanotype photography since 2017, exploring her curiosity around time, seasons and working with the elements, such as using sunlight to produce prints and seawater to develop. In 2019, she captured the light of the Autumn Equinox through a series of prints of circles. In 2020, Genevieve’s practice took a new depth in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on food insecurity, political arguments over free school meals in the UK, and the inequality of access to green space on socio-economic and ethnicity grounds, as shown by the Office for National Statistics and other research bodies during this period. Genevieve started experimenting with Anthotype photography — growing plants from seeds, using veg scraps and other kitchen ingredients — to create environmentally-sustainable and chemical-free light-sensitive photography emulsion of prints of pressed flowers and plants, developed in sunlight.

During 2020, whilst spending time outdoors, walking locally and in her garden, Genevieve witnessed birds building nests and was inspired to explore the concept of home in her series ‘Nest / Wreath / Scribble / Circle’. This also inspired her to programme the ‘Early Bird Sound Map’ a remote but shared dawn chorus event for Waveney & Blyth Arts, along the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Whilst she has stepped down in her role as Chair, overseeing the programme at W&BA, the dawn chorus map is available to listen to online and was broadcast at YARMONICS sound festival in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in September 2020.

In her community arts practice, Genevieve explores heritage and environmental themes with groups of all ages, through drawing, textile arts and working with found, recycled and natural materials. Genevieve has developed projects with people in care homes, museums, galleries, libraries, youth clubs, schools, community festivals and in outdoor public spaces.

Alongside freelance arts engagement projects, she currently works as an Associate Artist/Tutor at Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts, and leads Artist Educator Social Network, a peer-led network co-founded with Kaitlin Ferguson for artists working with people in East Anglia. In 2017-18, Genevieve was Youth Engagement Officer (maternity cover) at Time & Tide Museum, and from 2019-20, she was Chair at Waveney & Blyth Arts.

She holds current professional membership with AccessArt, Artists’ Union England, Artworks Alliance and GEM (Group for Education in Museums).
